Västmanland is located in Svealand (central Sweden), being with its ca 8 365 km² (2% of the whole country) the 16th biggest province of all 25. The province includes 3 counties and it belongs to the diocese of Västerås. It has a population of ca 315 000 inhabitants (9th place of 25), thus having a density of ca 38 inhabitants/km².
The highest point is Fjällberget in Ludvika kommun (northern Västmanland) with 466 m. The biggest lake is, except Mälaren (1 072 km²), Åmänningen (ca 25 km², altitude of 76 m), located in the north of the province. The plant symbol of the province is the mistletoe (misteln) and the animal is the roe deer (rådjuret). Other symbols: the European crested tit bird (tofsmes), the zander fish (gös), the scarce fritillary butterfly (boknätfjäril), the apple sort Fagerö, the fungus yellowfoot (trattkantarell), the big shaggy-moss (kranshakmossa), the rock type hematite (hematit) and the element of nitrogen (kväve/N).

The biggest city in Västmanland is Västerås with ca 126 190 inhabitants. Västmanland has even its own province song, Västmanlandsången or Jag ser fädernas bygd, written by Arvid Grane (1873-1956) and composed by Isidor Fröier (1876-1968).
