Västergötland

Västergötland is located in Götaland (southwestern Sweden), being with its ca 16 680 km² (4,1% of the whole country) the 8th biggest province of all 25. The province includes 4 counties and it belongs to the dioceses of Skara and Göteborg. It has a population of ca 1 361 330 inhabitants (2nd place of 25), thus having a density of ca 82 inhabitants/km².

The highest point is Galtåsen in Ulricehamns kommun (southeastern Västergötland) with 362 m. The biggest lake is, except Vänern (5 650 km²) and Vättern (1 893 km²), Unden (ca 93 km², altitude of 117 m), located in the northeast of the province. The plant symbol of the province is the heather (ljungen) and the animal and bird symbol is the common crane (tranan). Other symbols: the burbot fish (lake), the Alcon blue (alkonblåvinge), the apple sort Kavlås, the Crimson-waxy cap mushroom (scharlakansvaxskivling), the Abietinella abietina moss (gruskammossa), the rock type plateau diabase (platådiabas) and the element of uranium (uran/U).

Västergötland consists of 4 counties (län): Västra Götaland (the biggest), Jönköping, Halland and Örebro. Västergötland has 40 municipalities, X registration districts and X urban areas. The biggest city in Västergötland is, with the exception of Göteborg, Borås with ca 72 985 inhabitants. The province has even its own provincial song called Hymn till Västergötland or Jag hälsar dig, Västgöta rike, written by Paul Nilsson (1866-1951) and composed by Ivar Widéen (1871-1951). Crown princess Victoria (b. 1977) is duchess of Västergötland and Prince Daniel (b. 1973) is duke of Västergötland.
