Värmland is located in Svealand (western Sweden), being with its ca 18 204 km² (4,4% of the whole country) the 7th biggest province of all 25. The province includes 3 counties and it belongs to the dioceses of Karlstad and Skara. It has a population of ca 320 440 inhabitants (8th place of 25), thus having a density of ca 18 inhabitants/km².

The highest point is Granberget in Torsby kommun (northwestern Värmland) with 701 m. The biggest lake is, except Vänern (5 650 km²), Glafsfjorden (ca 94 km², altitude of 46 m), located in the southwest of the province. The plant symbol of the province is the chickweed-wintergreen (skogsstjärnan) and the animal is the wolf (vargen). Other symbols: the red-throated loon bird (smålom), the European smelt fish (nors), the scarce heath butterfly (brun gräsfjäril), the apple sort Stenbock, the Hygrophorus mushroom (sotvaxskivling), the common apple-moss (kuddäppelmossa), the rock type Kyanit quartzite (kyanitkvartsit) and the element of manganese (mangan/Mn).

Värmland consists of 3 counties (län): Värmland (the biggest), Örebro and Västra Götaland. Närke has 17 municipalities, X registration districts and X urban areas. The biggest city in Värmland is Karlstad with ca 64 215 inhabitants. The province has even its own provincial song called Värmlandsvisan or Ack Värmeland, du sköna, an old folk song, written by Anders Fryxell (1795-1881) and Fredrik August Dahlgren (1816-1895). Prince Carl Philip (b. 1979) is duke of Värmland and princess Sofia (b. 1984) duchess of Värmland.
