Södermanland (Sörmland) is located in Svealand (eastern Sweden), being with its ca 8 390 km² (2% of the whole country) the 15th biggest province of all 25. The province includes 4 counties and it belongs to the dioceses of Strängnäs and Stockholm. It has a population of ca 1 360 325 inhabitants (3rd place of 25), thus having a density of ca 162 inhabitants/km².

The highest point is Skogsbyås in Nyköping kommun (southeastern Södermanland) with 124 m. The biggest lake is, except Mälaren (1 075 km²), Båven (ca 64 km², altitude of 21 m), located in the center of the province. The plant symbol of the province is the European white water lily (vita näckrosen) and the animal and bird symbol is the osprey (fiskgjusen). Other symbols: the common bream fish (braxen), the shield bug insect (strimlus), the apple sort Åkerö, the horn of plenty mushroom (svart trumpetsvamp), the Plagiomnium undulatum moss (vågig praktmossa), the rock type vein gneiss (granatådergnejs) and the element of cobalt (kobolt/Co).

Södermanland consists of 4 counties (län): Södermanland (the biggest), Stockholm, Västmanland and Östergötland. Södermanland has 23 municipalities, 119 registration districts and 119 urban areas. The biggest city in Södermanland is, with the exception of Stockholm, Eskilstuna with ca 70 265 inhabitants. The province has even its own provincial song called Känner du landet, det härliga rika, written by Bernhard Elis Malmström (1816-1865) and Knut Hamnström (1813-1886). Prince Alexander (b. 2016) is duke of Södermanland.
