Småland is located in Götaland (southern Sweden), being with its ca 29 330 km² (7,8% of the whole country) the 4th biggest province of all 25. The province includes 5 counties and it belongs to the dioceses of Växjö, Linköping and Skara. It has a population of ca 774 180 inhabitants (5th place of 25), thus having a density of ca 27 inhabitants/km².
The highest point is Tomtabacken in Nässjö kommun (northwestern Småland) with 377 m. The biggest lake is, except Vättern (1 893 km²), Bolmen (ca 173 km², altitude of 141 m), located in the southwest of the province. The plant symbol of the province is the twinflower (linnean) and the animal symbol is the Eurasian otter (uttern). Other symbols: the song thrush bird (taltrast), the Wels catfish (mal), the European hornet insect (bålgeting), the apple sort Hornsberg, the coral tooth fungus (koralltaggsvamp), the goblin gold moss (lysmossa), the rock type red Växjö granite (röd växjögranit) and the element of potassium (kalium/K).

Småland consists of 5 counties (län): Kronoberg (the biggest), Jönköping, Kalmar, Halland and Östergötland. Småland has 33 municipalities, 293 registration districts and 209 urban areas. The biggest city in Småland is Jönköping with ca 99 380 inhabitants. The province has even its own provincial song called Smålandssången or Röd lyser stugan, written by Linnéa Andrén (1877-1962) and composed by Ivar Widéen (1871-1951).
