Östergötland

Östergötland is located in Götaland (southeastern Sweden), being with its ca 9 980 km² (2,5% of the whole country) the 14th biggest province of all 25. The province includes only 1 county and it belongs to the diocese of Linköping. It has a population of ca 463 515 inhabitants (6th place of 25), thus having a density of ca 47 inhabitants/km².

The highest point is Stenabohöjden in Ydre kommun (southern Östergötland) with 327 m. The biggest lake is, except Vättern (1 893 km²), Sommen (ca 93 km², altitude of 146 m), located in the southwest of the province. The plant symbol of the province is the cornflower (blåklinten) and the animal and bird symbol is the mute swan (knölsvanen). Other symbols: the Northern pike fish (gädda), the hermit beetle insect (läderbagge), the apple sort Gyllenkroks astrakan, the bare-toothed Russula mushroom (kankremla), the water star moss (vattenstjärna), the rock type Swedish green marble (kålmårdsmarmor) and the element of phosphorus (fosfor/P).

Östergötland consists of only 1 county (län) with the same namne. Östergötland has 13 municipalities, X registration districts and X urban areas. The biggest city in Västergötland is Linköping with ca 114 585 inhabitants. The province has even its own provincial song called Östgötasången or Så grant står Östergyllen, written by Sten Granlund (1871-1917) and composed by Gunnar Norlén (1884-1966). Princess Estelle (b. 2012) is duchess of Östergötland.
