Norrbotten

Norrbotten is located in Norrland (northern Sweden), being with its ca 26 800 km² (6,5% of the whole country) the 4th (of 25) biggest province. The province includes only 1 county and it belongs to the diocese of Luleå. It has a population of ca 195 750 inhabitants (14th place of 25), thus having a density of only 7,5 inhabitants/km².

The highest point is Vitberget (The White Mountain) in Älvsbyns kommun (southwestern Norrbotten) with 594 m and the biggest lake is Miekojärvi (ca 18 km², altitude of 99 m), located in the north-east. The plant symbol of the province is the Arctic bramble/raspberry (åkerbär) and the animal symbol is the Siberian jay (lavskrikan). Other symbols: the whooper swan bird (sångsvanen), the vendace fish (siklöjan), the velvet beetle insect (praktsammetslöparen), the apple sort Silva, the fungus stenmurkla, the yellow parasol moss (gul parasollmossa), the rock type gabbro and the element of iron (järn/Fe).

Norrbotten consists of only one county, Norrbotten county (län), with 9 municipalities (kommuner), 26 registration districts and 71 urban areas. Norrbotten is also Sweden’s easternmost province, the islet of Kataja in Haparanda kommun (the islet is divided between Sweden and Finland) being Sweden easternmost point (the easternmost point of the mainland is though the river Torne/Torneå, which also marks the border between Sweden and Finland). The biggest city in Norrbotten and the residence of the county is Luleå with ca 46 610 inhabitants.
