Närke is located in Svealand (central-south Sweden), being with its ca 4 126 km² (1% of the whole country) the 21st biggest province of all 25. The province includes 4 counties and it belongs to the diocese of Strängnäs. It has a population of ca 216 190 inhabitants (13th place of 25), thus having a density of ca 53 inhabitants/km².
The highest point is Tomasbodahöjden in Örebro kommun (northwestern Närke) with 298 m. The biggest lake is, except Vättern (1 893 km²) and Hjälmaren (483 km²), Sottern (ca 28 km², altitude of 71 m), located in the southeast of the province. The plant symbol of the province is the cowslip (gullvivan) and the animal is the hazel dormouse (hasselmusen). Other symbols: the yellowhammer bird (gulsparv), the common bleak fish (löja), the Baltic hawker insect (vassmosaikslända), the apple sort Sickelsjö vinäpple, the parasol mushroom (stolt fjällskivling), the Rose moss (rosmossa), the rock type dolomite (dolomit) and the element of zinc (zink/Zn).
