  1. Vasa Museum / Vasamuseet

It is the most visited museum in Scandinavia, built around the Vasa ship, the only entire ship preserved in the whole world from the 17th century. The ship, built at the initiative of King Gustav II Adolf, sank on its maiden voyage on the 10th of August 1628 after only 1 300m, and was preserved in the salty waters of the Salty Sea/Saltsjön until it was salvaged in 1961. Along with the ship itself, there were preserved around 700 sculptures and ornamental objects.

The Museum is located at the western point of the island of Djurgården, by Ladugårdslandsviken. It is close to Junibacken and the Alkohol Museum, just behind the Nordic Museum/Nordiska museet. The easiest way to get here is to take a walk from Östermalm, over the Djurgårdsbron/bridge and then directly to the right.

Quick facts: lenght 69 m, width 11 m, sail area 1 275 m2, 10 sails (the oldest preserved in the whole world!), crew 145 men, armament 64 canons and around 1 000 oak trees were used for its construction.

On the webb site, you can read more about the ship.
