Medelpad is located in Norrland (central Sweden), being with its ca 7 060 km² (1,7% of the whole country) the 17th biggest province of all 25. The province includes only 1 county and it belongs to the diocese of Härnösand. It has a population of ca 126 325 inhabitants (19th place of 25), thus having a density of ca 18 inhabitants/km².
The highest point is Myckelmyrberget in Ånge kommun (southwestern Medelpad) with 577 m. The biggest lake is Holmsjön (ca 51 km², altitude of 244 m), located in the northwest of the province. The plant symbol of the province is the European spruce (granen) and the animal symbol is the mountain hare (skogsharen). Other symbols: the red crossbill bird (mindre korsnäbben), the perch fish (abborre), the clouded Apollo butterfly (Mnemosynefjärilen), the apple sort Sund, the fungus sheep polypore (fårticka), the knights plume moss (kammossa), the rock type alnöit and the element of hydrogen (vete/H).
