Lappland is located in Norrland (northern Sweden), being with its ca 109 000 km² (26,5% of the whole country) the biggest province of all 25. The province includes 3 counties and it belongs to the diocese of Luleå. It has a population of ca 90 674 inhabitants (21st place of 25), thus having a density of only 0,83 inhabitants/km².
The highest point is Kebnekaise in Kiruna kommun (southwestern Lappland) with 2 111 m, being the highest point in Sweden. The biggest lake is Torne träsk (ca 330 km², altitude of 341 m), located in the central-west part of the province. The plant symbol of the province is the mountain avens (fjällsippan) and the animal symbol is the Arctic fox (fjällräven). Other symbols: the bluethroat bird (blåhaken), the Arctic char fish (fjällrödingen), the northern clouded yellow insect (högnordisk höfjäril), the apple sort Rescue, the fungus the orange birch bolete (tegelsoppen), the bäcknicka moss, the rock type apatite (apatit) and the element of silver (silver/Ag).

Lappland consists of three counties (län), Norrboten, Västerbotten and Jämtland, Norrbotten being the largest of the three. Lappland has 12 municipalities, 25 registration districts and 31 urban areas. Lappland is also Sweden’s northernmost province, the Three-Country Cairn/Treriksröset being Sweden’s northernmost point, being located at the meeting point of three countries: Sweden, Norway and Finland. The biggest city in Lappland is Kiruna with ca 46 610 inhabitants.
