Jämtland

Jämtland is located in Norrland (center-western Sweden), being with its ca 34 010 km² (8,2% of the whole country) the second biggest province of all 25. The province includes 3 counties and it belongs to the diocese of Härnösand. It has a population of ca 117 100 inhabitants (20th place of 25), thus having a density of only 3,5 inhabitants/km².

The highest point is Storsylen in Åre kommun (southwestern Jämtland) with 1 743 m. The biggest lake is Storsjön/the Big Lake (ca 456 km², altitude of 292 m), located in the central part of the province. The plant symbol of the province is the orchid brunkulla and the animal symbol is the elk (älgen). Other symbols: the Northern hawk-owl bird (hökugglan), the brown trout fish (öring), the bumblebee stormhattshumla, the apple sort Rödluvan/the Red Riding Hood, the fungus the false saffron milkcap (blodriskan), the pirensar moss, the rock type soapstone (täljsten) and the element of oxygen (syre/O).

Jämtland consists of two counties (län), Jämtland and Västerbotten, Jämtland being the largest. Jämtland has 9 municipalities, 54 registration districts and 48 urban areas. The biggest city in Jämtland is Östersund with ca 52 250 inhabitants. Jämtland has even its own provincial song called Jämtlandssången/The Jämtland song or Så tåga vi tillsammans/Like this we march together, in local dialect called Mæ går på stigom written by Wilhelm Peterson-Berger (1867-1942).
