Gästrikland is located in Norrland (central Sweden), being with its ca 4 185 km² (1% of the whole country) the 20th biggest province of all 25. The province includes 2 counties and it belongs to the diocese of Uppsala. It has a population of ca 155 700 inhabitants (16th place of 25), thus having a density of ca 37 inhabitants/km².
The highest point is Lustigknopp in Ockelbo kommun (northwestern Gästrikland) with 402 m. The biggest lake is Storsjön (ca 71 km², altitude of 62 m), located in the centre of the province. The plant symbol of the province is the lily of the valley (liljekonvaljen) and the animal symbol is the western capercaillie (tjädern). Other symbols: the black-throated loon bird (storlom), the herring fish (strömming), the black-veined white butterfly (hagtornsfjäril), the apple sort Malmbergs gylling, the fungus shingled hedgehog (fjällig taggsvamp), the tree climacium moss (palmmossa), the rock type Gävle sandstone (Gävlesandsten) and the element of chromium (krom/Cr).
