Dalsland

Dalsland is located in Götaland (central-western Sweden), being with its 3 715 km² (0,9% of the whole country) the 22nd (of 25) biggest province. It is divided between 2 counties and it belongs to the dioceses of Karlstad, Skara and Göteborg. It has a population of ca 50 600 inhabitants (23rd place of 25), thus having a density of 14 inhabitants/km².

The highest point is Baljåsen in Åmåls kommun (northern Dalsland) with 302 m. The biggest lake, except Vänern, is Stora Le (ca 136 km², altitude of 102 m), located in the west of the province. The symbol plant of the province is forget-me-not (förgätmigej) and the animal and bird symbol is the raven (korpen). Other symbols: the fourhorn sculpin fish (hornsimpa), the poplar admiral butterfly (aspfjäril), the apple sort Oranie, the slippery jack mushroom (smörsopp), the greater whipwort moss (stor revmossa), the rock type quartzite (kvartsit) and the element of silicon (kisel/Si).

Dalsland consists of 2 counties (län): Västra Götaland (the biggest) and Värmland. Dalsland has 8 municipalities, 43 registration districts and 19 urban areas. The biggest city in Dalsland is Åmål with ca 9 100 inhabitants. The province has even its own provincial sång called Såg du ett land which translates as Did you see a country, written and composed by Frans Oskar Myrén (1878-1955).
