Dalarna is located in Svealand (central Sweden), being with its 29 086 km² (7% of the whole country) the 4th biggest province of all 25. The province includes 5 counties (län) and it belongs to the diocese of Västerås. It has a population of ca 284 000 inhabitants (11th place of 25), thus having a density of ca 10 inhabitants/km².
The highest point is Storvätteshågna in Älvdalens kommun (northwestern Dalarna) with 1 204 m. The biggest lake is Siljan (ca 292 km², altitude of 161 m), located in the middle of the province. The plant symbols of the province are the harebell/Scottis bluebell (blåklockan) and the spreading bellflower (ängsklockan) and the animal and bird symbol is the eagle-owl (berguven). Other symbols: the common minnow fish (elritsa), the purple-edged copper butterfly (violettkantad guldvinge), the apple sort Tuna, the fungus velvet bolete (sandsopp), the thin fountain moss (smal näckmossa), the rock type porphyry (porfyr) and the element of copper (koppar/Cu).

Dalarna consists of 5 counties (län): Dalarna which is the biggest, Gävleborg, Jämtland, Värmland and Örebro. Dalarna has 19 municipalities, 57 registration districts and 117 urban areas. The biggest city in Dalarna is Borlänge with ca 43 110 inhabitants.
Dalarna has even its own provincial sångs called Dalkarlasång which translates as The Dalecarlian song, written by Gustaf Nyblæus and composed by Otto Lindblad and Om sommaren sköna which translates as In the beautiful summer, written by Andreas Wallenius. Prince Gabriel (b. 2017) is duke of Dalarna.
