Mansnamnet Valentin är latinskt och kommer från Valentinus, en avledning av adjektivet valens (frisk, stark). Anledningen till att just Sankt Valentin blivit känd är helt enkelt att hans minnesdag råkat bli 14 februari 🙂 Biskop Valentin bodde i staden Terni norr om Rom. Han ska ha dött på Via Flamina norr om Rom där han blev ihjälslagen med käppar och klubbor och därefter halshuggen, allt detta kring år 270 under kejsar Claudius Gothicus. Enligt en legend ska han i hemlighet ha massvigt många ogifta unga män med deras kärestor. Annars skulle dessa tvångsrekryteras till kejsarens armé. Valentins handlande uppdagades och han blev satt i fängelse där han ska ha dött den 14 februari. Idag är det ca. 8 900 svenskar som heter Valentin.
The male name Valentin is Latin and comes from Valentinus, a derivation of the adjective valens (healthy, strong). The reason why Saint Valentine became famous is simply that his memorial day happened to be February 14th 🙂 Bishop Valentin lived in the city of Terni north of Rome. He is said to have died on Via Flamina north of Rome where he was killed with sticks and clubs and then beheaded, all this around the year 270 under Emperor Claudius Gothicus. According to a legend, he secretly and massively married many unmarried young men to their betrothed. Otherwise they would be forcibly recruited to the emperor's army. Valentin's actions were discovered and he was imprisoned where he is said to have died on February 14th. Today, there are approx. 8,690 Swedes named Valentin.
Men bakom dessa legender ligger en äldre romersk tradition. Den 15 februari firades i Rom lupercalierna. Under detta firande brukade romerska ynglingar få dra lott om stadens vackraste ogifta tjejer genom att plocka upp lappar med deras namn på. But behind these legends lies an older Roman tradition. On February 15th, the Lupercalieres were celebrated in Rome. During this celebration, Roman youths used to draw lots for the city's most beautiful unmarried girls by picking up notes with their names on them. The girls were then paired with the boys who had drawn up their names, a custom still alive in Britain. Read more about the lupercalies in the post about Candlemas Day.
Våren brukar göra sitt intåg runt Medelhavet vid denna tid och fåglarna ansågs bilda par runt Valentindagen. I det medeltida England, Skottland och Frankrike parades ungdomar samman genom lottning på denna dag. Seden levde vidare in på 1900-talet i Storbritannien och USA där förälskade ungdomar fortfarande brukar skicka valentinkort till sina utvalda, oftast innehållande en vers som exempelvis ”Roses are red, violets are blue. / Cherries are sweet, and so are you”. I dessa länder anordnas även Valentinbaler och man kan ge sin utvalda tjej blommor och choklad.
Spring usually makes its way in the Mediterranean region at this time and the birds were considered to form pairs around Valentine's Day. In medieval England, Scotland and France, young people were paired together by drawing lots on this day. The custom lived on into the 20th century in Great Britain and the United States, where young people in love usually send Valentine's cards to their chosen one, usually containing a verse such as 'Roses are red, violets are blue. / Cherries are sweet, and so are you'. In these countries, Valentine's Balls are also organized and you can give your chosen girl flowers and chocolate.
I Sverige introducerades Valentinfirandet i mitten av 1980-talet vilket berodde på att blomsterhandlare och andra kommersiella spekulanter hade verkat aktivt för dess firande ända sedan 1960-talet! I början av 1980-talet brukade kvinnor uppvakta sina väninnor med blomsteruppsatser planterade i hjärtformade små porslinsskålar. I början av 1990-talet fick seden enorm popularitet i skolor där bruket att ungdomar uppvaktar varandra med blommor den dagen fortfarande är populärt. Uppvaktas man med en nejlika betyder det vänskap, blir det i stället en ros så betyder det kärlek. Även färgen på rosen kan variera: gult betyder vänskap, rosa flirt och rött kärlek! Alla hjärtans dag firas idag med blomsterbuketter, romantiska kort, hjärtprydda bakelser och hjärtformade askar fyllda med röda geléhjärtan.
In Sweden, the Valentine's Day was introduced in the mid-1980s, which was due to the fact that florists and other commercial speculators had been actively working for its celebration since the 1960s! In the early 1980's, women used to court their girlfriends with flower arrangements planted in heart-shaped small porcelain bowls. In the early 1990s, it then gained enormous popularity in schools where the custom among young people to courting each other with flowers on the day it is still popular. If you are greeted with a carnation, it means friendship, if it is a rose, it means love. The color of the rose can also vary: yellow means friendship, pink flirtation and red love! Valentine's Day is celebrated today with flower bouquets, romantic cards, heart-adorned pastries and heart-shaped boxes filled with red jelly hearts.
Själv ser jag på denna relativt nya sed som exkluderande. Vad händer med dem som inte blir uppvaktade och inte får något, speciellt elever i skolmiljö? Vad om dem som är mindre framgångsrika, mindre vackra och med låg självkänsla? Vad händer dem som inte passar in i den heterosexuella normen? Visst blir de besvikna och sårade? Några kanske går även ett steg längre och begår självmord. Tänk på det nästa gång ni firar Alla hjärtans dag! Är verkligen allas hjärtan glada och kärleksfyllda den dagen?
Personally, I see this relatively new custom as exclusive. What happens to those who are not courted and do not receive anything, especially students in a school environment? What happens to those who are less successful, less beautiful and with low self-esteem? What about those who do not fit into the heterosexual norm? Surely they will be disappointed and hurt? Some may even go a step further and commit suicide. Think about it next time you celebrate Valentine's Day! Are everyone's hearts really happy and full of love that day?
